    Central High School of Commerce

    In 1928, Herman Voaden was appointed as Head of the English Department at Central High School of Commerce (now Central Commerce Collegiate). Voaden was an influential playwright and an important creative force within Canada’s theatre and dance communities. Voaden experimented with new American and European theatre and dance concepts. He was involved in the formation of the Canada Council in 1957 and became the first president of the Canadian Conference of the Arts.
