    Corporal Punishment

In the early years of education, corporal punishment was not only allowed but expected in the classroom. Trimming (a slang term for getting the strap) was a common method of discipline; the number of strikes dependent on the offense committed. The strap was made of rubber and was standardized in 1897 to a length of 15 inches and a width of 1 ½ inches. It was administered to the palms of the hands.
