1944 Communist Elected to Toronto School Board

  • Mrs. Edna Ryerson, Communist Party School Board Trustee Candidate

    Divisive Political Stances

John Boyd, a man with ties to the Labour Progressive Party (Communist Party) was elected as a trustee of the Toronto School Board for Ward 5 in the 1943-44 municipal election. But, after just two months with the board, in March of 1944, Boyd announced that he’d enlisted in the Canadian military. In his words, this was “a proud moment in my life”. Boyd later endorsed a Labour Progressive Party connection, Edna Ryerson, in her candidacy for a place on the Board in 1948. This election is remembered for the fierce anti-communist rhetoric that was leveled at Boyd and Edna Ryerson by some of their opponents.
