1939 The Royal Visit

  • King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Visiting Riverdale Park

    An Important Visit

In support of their Empire and Imperial efforts, King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth visited Toronto during their six week Canada trip in 1939. The students and staff of the Toronto Board of Education met them with full honours at Riverdale Park. Hundreds of Torontonians lined the park as the royal couple arrived. This was the first time that the reigning monarch of the British Empire had visited Canada.
