    Higher Education for Girls

In the Annual Report of the Standing Committee on School Management of 1864, a recommendation was made on the desirability of establishing one or more superior (high) schools for boys and girls. As the boys were able to attend Upper Canada College or the Grammar School, the committee recommended the establishment of a Girls’ High School. Egerton Ryerson was an advocate not simply of high school education for girls but also of scholarships for them. City Council, however, did not approve the funds.
