    More Improvement Needed

In 1871, Ryerson proposed another school act, this one to Improve the Common and Grammar Schools of the Province of Ontario. He saw the need for a number of changes including the introduction of high school entrance exams, compulsory school attendance until age 14 and adequate school accommodations for students in every school section, to name a few. In addition, grammar schools were to be renamed ‘high schools’ and collegiate institutes were established to offer a more university focused, classical education.
