1850 First Elected Chair of Toronto Public School Board

    Dr. Joseph Workman became the first elected Chair of the Toronto Public School Board in 1850 and held the position until 1852. A lover of independent thought, Workman was a strong advocate of state-funded public education for children. A true jack-of-all-trades, Dr. Workman was not only a physician but also a teacher, writer, critic and linguist.
