    Ryerson Advocates for Physical Training

In 1852 Egerton Ryerson published a series of articles on “Physical Training in Schools” in the Journal of Education for Upper Canada. The articles were consistent with Ryerson’s earlier 1846 Report on a System of Public Elementary Instruction for Upper Canada recommending physical training as a supplement to more traditional subjects. The articles were published again in 1857 by the Department of Public Instruction in Upper Canada. Schools in Toronto however, were slow in adopting physical training into the curriculum.
