The Question of Funding
A political disagreement regarding who should pay for public schools prompted the schools to prematurely close on June 30, 1848 and remain closed until July 1,1849. Incredibly, a full year of instruction was lost. Ryerson was distraught. Although people supported the idea of free public education, funding technicalities would continue to cause problems.
