    Certificate of Moral Character

In order to be accepted into the Normal School, men and women would complete an application package that included a letter of recommendation from a clergyman or a school inspector. This letter was known as a “certificate of moral character” and was written as a testament to the student’s good character, their religious affiliation and their relevant teaching experience, if they had any. As the Superintendent of Schools for Upper Canada, Egerton Ryerson would have received these certificates personally.
